This isn't his first dance. Monday's announcements are laying the foundation for the next round of interviews.

The two announcements tell a whole story:
  • The Paul Manafort and Rick Gates indictments tell everyone that Mueller is serious. He is willing to send you to prison. And, he disables Trump's pardon power. The tax evasion charges will also result in state charges which cannot be pardoned by the President.

  • The unexpected announcement that George Papadopoulos had already secretly pled guilty to lying to the FBI and the special counsel about his contacts with Russian officials during the campaign tells you that Mueller will make a deal.

  • Together: If you cooperate, we’ll give you a sweet deal. if you don’t, we’re going to hit you with everything we’ve got and you’re going to prison.

Think for a moment. They arrested Papadopoulos in July. There was absolutely no reason to reveal the Papadopoulos deal yesterday, except to send a message.

The message: I know a lot about what happened. You don't know how much I know because Papadopoulos was probably wearing a wire and recording any interactions with you for the last three months. If you lie to me, you are taking a big risk.

Together, the Manafort/Papadopoulos announcements are the stick/carrot which Mueller is revealing to his targets.

Do you think Flynn got the message?

I wonder what is going through Jared Kushner's mind today.
