He was asked if he supported an FBI investigation, which means investigating the allegations, those who made them, AND HIS CLAIMS.

It is not the same thing at all.

Kavanagh has been publicly accused and it's national news. NOT wanting the FBI to clear it up is tantamount to admitting that they are going to find something he doesn't want found. It also isn't a secret that the entire country doesn't know already.

Your scenario is suggesting that someone report themselves for something NO ONE knows (aside of the gossipy, accusing neighbors) and asking to MAKE IT a bigger matter.
