Of course, whoever is making the assertion should have to provide the proof. If you claim god(s) do not exist, then you, unfortunately, shoulder the burden of proof. If you claim that god(s) exist, then you shoulder the burden of proof.

If you sit back and wait for someone else to make a claim, then you can add to their burden.
