that if something should be done, it should be done federally.

IMO for many the very IDEA of states having any role other than essentially symbolic is simply confusing.

And I'm not just talking about those who, if asked, would actively advocate for the abolishment of state governments entirely, but a much broader group for whom the 10th Amendment is completely unknown.
