I expect he paid it in court as that was always the method. But yes, he was out without protection. Remember, he was not only POTUS, but a general accustomed to leading armies into war and a sloppy drunk. He would have refused protections most likely.

I, too, love little historical stories like this. I knew about it before, but didn't mention it simply because the circumstances were SO different that it didn't add to my assertions about indicting a POTUS. Maybe I should have anyway since it does support the idea that a POTUS CAN be arrested, even if the circumstances are SO different.
