Trump Was Asked, Point Blank...
Tue Feb 5, 2019 11:30am (XFF: condemn white nationalists, neo-nazis, and white supremacists.

He declined, and instead, responded that there were good people on both sides of the issue.

One could make the argument that what Trump meant to say was: "Of course, I condemn all hate groups, including those you mentioned. To be specific, among others, I condemn white nationalists, neo-nazis, white supremacists, and any who believe that we are stronger by dividing ourselves than we are in unity. But there were good people who were there to protest the removal of the statues, because this issue is complicated and complex. Reducing it to a sound byte does nobody any justice and serves only to ratchet up racial tensions. I do not want all the good people who were there to protest the removal for other reasons to be lumped in with the bigots and xenophobes who were there to cause problems. And when it comes to problems, they were not the only ones who came looking to cause them. There are increasing numbers of well-meaning counter-protesters who have forsaken the guidepost of nonviolence and who seek to provoke the worst among us to action so that violence in return can be justified. It can't be. And this can't be who we, as America, become as a response to this issue."

You could make that argument. But Trump is the president and he has access to all the best people - just ask him - and certainly any of them could have put together something better than my off the cuff remarks above.

Trump said what he meant, and it opened a window onto his thought processes.

Trump doesn't seek to help minorities. He has a specific group that he seeks to help. He might look for some window dressing here and there, but that's all it is. His priorities have been clear from the beginning.
