I wouldn't say it is a lesser of two evils argument...

Because it isn't really a binary choice. We aren't stuck with either abusing protestors or tasteless costumes with no other options... The truth is there could be both and more, or even neither.

Nowhere did I suggest that we should simply say it's the lesser of two evils and ignore it entirely. I just suggest that we don't view it in a vacuum.

The point is that there were somewhat different standards in that day than there are today. Truthfully for many in that era, the abuse of the protestors was not that big a deal.

IMO it is important to judge people by the standards that actually applied in the time and not by standards that they could have known would exist at some point in the future.

So, again, I would say that even in that time it was tasteless, but in that time, blackface would not have likely been seen as being as unequivocally racist as it is perceived today.

I look at his actions back then, and other examples like Joy Behar's Halloween blackface appearance, and measure them against the standards of THAT day, and then measure the rest of their lives against the standards of the day being considered....

Otherwise we find ourselves condemning the vast majority of people who lived in any other time except today.

I would say that we should not simply ignore the black face photographs, but view them in light of the rest of their lives.

Do we have any other evidence that the governor is racist? Or might there even be evidence that he has worked FOR the furthering of civil rights?
