Now I agree that Bushler did a lot to militarize the civilian police force. My local Sheriff is actually going to auction off a significant stack of military surplus vehicles because they can't afford to maintain them for the 3 or 4 major meth busts we get a year. The busts have been going on for 50 years. It's just in the last 15 or so we've had this massive and expensive military style capability. It doesn't do the job any more effectively than it did with Deputies and a dog arriving on site and quietly taking the operation down... in many cases without the neighbors being aware. Nope, now days, the more 'Shock and Awe' the better.

      I've said this for years...we need beat cops. I read something once that Tokyo - for all its immensity - has little police stations on the corner every few streets, every neighborhood, and a couple... more
