here... Partisan politics will call it gamesmanship, and it is, but IMO it could avoid some of the longer term problems.

I'm not sure which would be better. Actively dismiss the Lt Gov, or let him resign. IMO letting him resign is quieter and avoids the legal/political wrangling of firing him, but at the same time, actually dismissing him sends a stronger message.

But then, you could appoint a 'clean' Lt Governor, and then the governor resigns as quietly as possible leaving the new Governor to appoint a Lt who is equally scandal free. And I guess the same applies as to how to get him out of office. Resigning is quiet, but actively booting him out of office allows the party to make a statement regarding their house cleaning.
