Cardona convicted again in Miami Beach Baby Lollipops murder case

Two decades after she was sent to Death Row for torturing and murdering her infant son known as Baby Lollipops, Ana Maria Cardona is again a convicted killer.

Miami-Dade jurors on Friday morning, after about 14 hours of deliberation over two days, convicted Cardona of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse, setting up another possible death sentence.

Cardona, 48, showed no emotion when the verdict was read. Instead, she looked down and squeezed her attorney's hand.

The death penalty portion of her trial will begin Aug. 30 in front of Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Reemberto Diaz.

Cardona was convicted in the 1990 slaying of her son, Lazaro ``Baby Lollipops'' Figueroa, whose emaciated and beaten body was found abandoned in some bushes in Miami Beach.

Cardona was convicted in 1992 and sentenced to Death Row, but the conviction was later overturned by the Florida Supreme Court.

Hers was not the only death penalty case being deliberated Friday in Miami-Dade's criminal court.

Upstairs on the sixth floor, jurors Friday began deliberations in the case of Grady Nelson, 52, a former social worker aide accused of butchering his wife, and raping and stabbing his two stepchildren.

Nelson is accused of fatally stabbing his wife, Angelina Martinez, 32, at their South Miami-Dade house.

Prosecutors say he stabbed her more than 60 times in January 2005, leaving a butcher knife lodged in her head. He also allegedly stabbed and raped her mentally handicapped two children, one of whom he had been sexually abusing.

Nelson admitted the crime to Miami-Dade Police in a videotaped confession, one his defense team says was coerced.

Jurors will deliberate in the courtroom of Circuit Judge Jacqueline Scola.
