T&T Under 17s get first point vs Guyana.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Under 17 footballers were forced to come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Guyana in a keenly contested encounter at the National Sports Centre, Bermuda on Wednesday night.
The result, coupled with Bermuda’s 5-0 beating of St Lucia in the second game, meant that T&T must now win their next two matches against St Lucia and Bermuda in order to stay alive in the Caribbean Football Union World Qualifying tournament.
Playing in front an appreciative crowd of around 2.500, T&T took some time to settle and paid the early price as the quick attacking Guyanese drew first blood in the 9th minute. The T&T defence failed to deal with a ball played across from the right and forward Dwight Peters turned and fired a left footed volley which flew into the left near upper corner.
Already showing nerves in their first competitive outing, captain Josimar Belgrave suffered the early setback and continued to chase their opponents for much of the opening twenty minutes.
On seventeen minutes, midfielder Kwesi Thomas had T&T’s first decent try at goal when his right footer sailed over bar. That play seemed to have lifted T&T’s confidence on the ball, going into attack.
Seven minutes later it was Gorian Highley continuing his prolific form as he sneaked one low past goalkeeper Fidel Smith from inside the box. Guyana continued to pile on the pressure with their quick front men Dwight Peters and Shevane Seaforth making deep runs to meet the constant supply of long balls into the T&T half.
Peters had T&T goalie Andre Charles saving low in the 30th minute and then the ‘keeper tipped out a ball from Konata Mannings back into play before Seaforth’s rebound crashed off the side of the near left post. Thomas had another effort going over bar and then Belgrave hurried off his shot from a good position inside the area, but straight to the ‘keeper.
The T&T bench went up in the 40th minute when Highley latched onto a long ball and with the ‘keeper advancing, the Memphis player lobbed from the edge of the penalty box, only to see the ball go inches over bar.
The T&T defence led by Jamal Warner were never given a break and were left thanking Charles for a few timely interceptions as the half ended. Both teams came out intent on finding the go ahead goal after the halftime interval but it was T&T which had the first couple looks at the net.
Gerron McKnight’s effort was deflected away for a corner but soon after T&T’s Charles had to pull off a couple saves to cracks by Carlos Monkhouse and Mannings.
Striker Simba Aberdeen had a close effort from deep in the area and then soon after he neatly laid off from the touchline for Highley who directed the ball home only to be adjudged offside.
Five minutes from the end substitute Marvin James shot straight at the ‘keeper and then he put on a fine display of skill, moving to his left and leaving the defender going the wrong way as the loudest cheers came from the fans on that instant.
The final whistle followed a couple minutes later ending a contest which should have seen one of the teams taking full points but at the same time setting the stage for an interesting last two days of action.
