St Lucia v T&T (01-Nov-2002) - U-17.

No goals as TnT left depending.
By: Shaun Fuentes in Bermuda.

Trinidad and Tobago could only muster a scoreless draw with St Lucia in their second match of the Caribbean Football Union World Under 17 qualifying tournament at the National Sports Centre in Bermuda on Friday night.
Needing a victory to keep stay at the top of the race going into Sunday's final pair of matches, TnT were left on two points and were left depending on the outcome of the other matches to be played on Sunday.
A late second half strike by captain Konata Mannings spurred Guyana to a 1-0 win over the hosts in the second game on Friday which means the only chance left for TnT (two points) would be an outright win over Bermuda (three points) on Sunday along with a either a victory for St Lucia (one point) or a draw for them in their game versus Guyana on the final day of competition. A victory for Guyana over St Lucia would send TnT out and the Guyanese through to the final CFU round.
TnT started the game much more positive fashion than they did against the Guyanese and again were made to rue their missed chances at the final whistle.
As early as the opening minute, striker Gorian Highley shot over bar and then soon after Simba Aberdeen headed over bar from Highley's cross.
Eight minutes elapsed before midfielder Marlon Ramsumair won the ball in TnT's half and served the ball up the right side for Aberdeen. He found Highley but the marksman could only direct his low left footer wide of the near right post.
TnT enjoyed the better of the possession and continued to try the goal with Highley hitting another couple shots wide from beyond the penalty box.
On fifteen minutes, midfielder Shevhon Abraham received his first yellow card for a rash tackle and would pay the price in the late stages of the match as a second caution saw him being ejected from play.
TnT did manage to put the ball home in the 19 th minute but Aberdeen was adjudged offside after hitting home low on a through pass. A minute later Aberdeen went inches close as his glancing header from a right side cross flashed past the far left post.
St Lucia playing with five defenders, hardly got a sight at the TnT goal leaving goalkeeper Andre Charles a mere spectator for much of the first half. However, at the same time, the young "Soca Warriors" were making their lives harder by failing to find the target.
Highley continued to try his luck and on one instance, neatly danced his way past three players on the inside right of the box but shot low and wide in the 44th minute when he collected on the top left channel but his right Ramsumair's turn to miss came when his left footer went straight into the keeper's gloves.
St Lucia s best chance of the half came when a bad clearance led to Magnum Valcin picking up on the edge of the box but his chip was well handled by Charles.
The second half was a much different story as the St Lucians were content on keeping possession and even managed to enjoy more of the ball in TnT's half. Jamal Warner and his defenders had previously done their job in the first half and while they continued to keep the St Lucians at bay as the second half progressed, the TnT midfield was finding it difficult to see much of the ball.
Substitute striker Akiel De Freitas, on for Aberdeen, had one of the TnT's better moments of the half when he collected a long ball on the top right of the box and eluded three defenders as the ball bounced on the top edge but his left footer on the volley flashed inches wide of the left post.
As the minutes ticked away, what seemed to be the winner was only another play to leave the TnT contingent holding their heads in disbelief. The ball came across from the right, and with De Freitas well positioned inside the six yard box, his seemed heading for the net with keeper Randy Poleon beaten only for a St Lucian defender to deflect the ball away. The rebound was scrambled away to safety. With that, TnT were left hanging on until Sunday's day of decision.

TnT line-up:
1.Andre Carles, 3.Mathew Cupid, 4.Machel James, 2.Jamal Warner 16.Marvin James, 6.Josimar Belgrave, 7.Kwesi Thomas, 12.Shevhon Abraham, 14.Marlon Ramsumair (5.Sean Bateau 62nd), 11. Simba Aberdeen (15.Akil De Freitas 59th), 10. Gorian Highley.
