Errol McFarlane double sees T&T past St Vincent.
Issued By: Shaun Fuentes, in St Vincent.

Lebanon-based striker Errol McFarlane jr was the hero for Trinidad and Tobago as his late double guided the “Soca Warriors” to a 2-0 victory over St Vincent and the Grenadines in their 2006 semi final round World Cup qualifier at Arnos Vale, St Vincent, on Wednesday.
McFarlane silenced the packed Arnos Vale with his first striker in the 79th minute when he stabbed home from close range at a point when the home team was pushing and came close to breaking the deadlock.
He then sealed the three points for coach Bertille St Clair’s team in the 87th minute when Marlon Rojas found him from the left and with the Vincent defense napping he clinically fired home from just inside the box past goalkeeper Fitzgerald Bramble to send the small band of T&T fans, backed by Angostura Woodbrook Playboys, into a frenzy.
“The result was a great one for us away for home. I thought we got a strong fight but our team never gave into it and that’s what counted in the end,” coach St Clair told TTFF Media after the game “We were affected a bit by the heat and then the Vincentians were coming at us but we were able to withstand their pressure. We have work to do still but I think piece by team things are coming together.”
The goals were a late relief for hardworking skipper Angus Eve and his men who were made to endure large periods of pressure from the Vincentians who were inspired by English-based striker Rodney Jack.
Coach St Clair threw midfielder Brent Rahim on the right of midfield and his constant running at the Vincentians had a valuable impact as his cross from the right led to Lawrence flicking on for McFarlane to nail home for the opening item.
Moments before T&T also had a close call against them when McFarlane scored from close up after Eve did all the hard work, moving into the box before playing across.
Birmingham City striker Stern John, who had a relatively quiet afternoon, had a close first half miss when a quick move forward saw McFarlane play across from the right for him but his touch from close range was stopped by the’keeper.
Defender Marvin Andrews also went close with a header but the Vincentians had their fair share of scoring chances with Jack being the main culprit. He hit wide on a one on one with ‘keeper Daurance Williams in the 32nd minute. Orlando Williams had a glorious chance in the 72nd minute but somehow hit wide from point blank range as T&T seemed to be wilting at that stage of the game before coming to life soon after. The T&T defense of Andrews, Dennis Lawrence, Brent Sancho and Marlon Rojas were made to work harder than they may have expected but were the ones smiling at the end as T&T look forward to their next semi-final encounter away to St Kitts/Nevis on September 5.

Patriot Up-Close:

Well fellas we did it! Errol Mc Farlane scored a double late in the game to give us 3 points, BUT it was NOT pretty !!! SVG out-played us for long periods especially in the first half.

T&T’s starting line-up:-

---------------------------D Williams---------------------------

In fact, SVG signaled their intentions early with a early foray which but for woeful finishing could easily have made it a 1-0 score line by 15 mins in! To be honest, our defence looked BAD!!! Most of SVG's raids came down our left side where both Rojas and Lawrence were left for dead on many occasions. The odd late tackles here and poor finishing combined to ensure that T&T ended the half 0-0. ONE POSITIVE I MUST MENTION THOUGH ARNOLD DWARIKA TACKLED AND WORKED HIS SOCKS OFF !!!

In the second half, it was again a workman like performance from T&T, BOTH Rougier and Eve got booked for some robust LATE challenges, but we were showing tremendous heart !!! With just over 10 mins left, McFarlane met a cross after a neat interplay with Eve, Dwarika and Rahim (who had come on to replace Jones) to conjure up the 1st goal. Spann then replaced Dwarika, and a few minutes later, T&T got our second goal when an unmarked McFarlane shot into the net from close range! Sealy replaced him (McFarlane) for the final 5 mins or so.

To be honest it was an UGLY win! But having said that, so many teams I have seen the T&T team outplayed teams with attractive ball, dominated possession and then lose to the odd goal or two. So it was nice for us to be the beneficiary of such good fortune for a change ! However WE MUST IMPROVE, ESPECIALLY DEFENSIVELY ! - I am NOT convinced that the 3-5-2 system employed works given the players we have.

Player Ratings:-

Daurance Williams - 6.
Looked nervous and had the Trini supporters gasping when he failed to hold onto a cross ball into the area, fumbling it TWICE ! He was also dumping the ball ineffectively too! He had a much better 2nd half.

Brent Sancho - 7.
Had a decent game, played a close marking game but was still left for pace a few times.

Marvin Andrews - 7.
Looked more composed on the ball and gave his usual aggressive tackling style.

Dennis Lawrence - 7.
Read the game well, but was left for dead far TOO many times, but in his defence, he was often left hung out to dry.

Marlon Rojas - 6.5.
Probably the least effective of the defenders, was often out-paced as most of SVG’s attacks came down his side, but he was pretty impressive going forward, producing some nice runs and decent link up play with mid-field.

Kenwyne Jones - 6.5.
The opposite of Rojas, he defended well, giving Sancho support but was slow going forward and when he did, his crosses were lacking. Showed tremendous heart though seemed to run out of steam in the 2nd half.

Angus Eve - 8.
Had a VERY good game, made some impressive runs, played a major part in our opening goal and even got booked for one of his late tackles… he too ran out of steam in the latter stages of the 2nd half.

Arnold Dwarika - 8.
Also had a great game ! Dropped back to win the ball, tackled and linked up well with Stern John.

Anthony Rougier - 8.5.
Did a lot of the “dirty” work that people so often fail to notice! Got booked for his troubles but made sure that the SVG midfielders and strikers passed the ball instead of trying to take him on :} Won a lot of balls and launched many an attack. Was also a calming influence when things were not going well.

Stern John - 6.
Probably one of the worst games I’ve seen him play for T&T ! Fell a lot, was very ineffective and it showed, he had 2, maybe 3 shots all game, including one ballooned over bar.

Errol McFarlane - 8.
I was probably going to give him the LOWEST ranking had he NOT scored ! I mean he did very little in the first half and was not any more penetrative than Stern. But the boy can finish !!! He won’t get so much space against stronger opposition, but he deserves a recall.

Brent Rahim - 6.5.
Had a decent game but, was NOT as much of a factor as I felt he could have been ! Was obviously more attacking than Jones though, and did drop back, but showed little of the creativity and flair he had some years back. Maybe I am being hard on him, but somehow I expected MORE.

Silvio Spann - 6.
Was not much of a factor, but I believe, coming on just as we had scored, he was given instructions to assist Rougier defensively and let Eve do more attacking.

Scott Sealy - 8.
In 5 mins he showed a class and style that made me wonder what he could have done if given more time! I believe he should have replaced Stern John and NOT Errol McFarlane. He will go on to serve T&T with distinction for many years to come.

Congrats T&T !!!! Now onto St Kitts/Nevis !!!!
