Although I cannot say without seeing you what the problem with your hip is, if it is becoming more painful with time, I would be happy to check it out for you. Patients with Cerebral Palsy have some unique issues that make treatment of hip arthritis particularly challenging. Depending on the type and severity of your C.P., you might be a candidate for surgery, either some type of osteotomy (cutting and re-orientation of the ball or socket) or a total hip replacement. Some C.P. hips have a very shallow or malformed hip socket and can have deformity of the upper femur as well. The severity of the problem is often correlated to the severity and type of C.P. These anatomical abnormalities, as well as abnormal forces placed on the hip due to spasticity of the muscles, can lead to arthritic changes. Although complication rates are higher with total hip replacement in patients with C.P., it can be done if certain precautions are taken.
