pregnancy after hip replacement
Fri Apr 13, 2007 5:00pm

Hi Kim,
I am 29 years old. I had a "slipped hip" at age 11 and had a routine operation to pin it back in place. Unfortunately I got an infection which resulted in 4 more operations and eventually a total hip replacement at the age of 21. For me, the THR was the best decision I ever made. It has given me a quality of life I have not had from age 11. I dont have full movement in the hip but I can get around easily with no limp! and can drive, cycle, walk etc pain free. People would never know I had a hip replacement unless I told them. The main reason I wanted to reply to you was to let you know that I had a son 5 years ago, 3 years after my THR. I was very worried at first and was also told that there isnt really much research etc in this area as most THR patients are past child bearing years!!. The first 7 months of pregnancy were fine and I had no problems with my hip at all. However, the last 2 months were difficult and I had pain in the joint and movement became resticted. The hospital advised me not to worry and said it was due to the added stress on the joint caused by the baby and extra weight I had put on (4 stone!!), they assured me that once I had given birth the pain should reduce and the movement return to normal. I was very unsure of this info and thought my hip would be ruined!. I had a planned C section as I didnt have enough flexibility in the hip joint for a normal birth. But after the baby was born the pain did subside and the movement returned to how it was pre-pregnancy. As soon as I began to lose the excess weight the hip joint returned to how it had been before. I am now approaching my 6th month of pregnancy with my second child- a daughter this time, and so far so good. I have a little pain and stiffness in the joint but its easily bearable - and this time I am determined not to put on too much excess weight which should hopefully help. I have been told I will need another C Section, as a natural birth can cause complications to a hip replacement. They told me there is a slight chance of hip dislocation during childbirth so I am happy to have the C Section instead!. You mentioned about mini incision surgery - I cant comment on that as I know nothing about it. But with regards to having children after a hip replacement, all I can say is that I am proof that it is possible!
Please feel free to ask me any questions and I can at least answer them based on my experiences.
Take care, Liz
