MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Attorneys for death row inmate Thomas Arthur
have asked the Alabama Supreme Court not to set another execution
date for him.

They filed court papers arguing that the next step in the case should
be DNA testing. They say the testing would show whether Arthur was
really involved in the 1982 contract killing of Troy Wicker Jr. of
Muscle Shoals.

Arthur was scheduled to die July 31, but the Alabama Supreme Court
stayed the execution after another inmate confessed to the Wicker
slaying. State Attorney General Troy King then asked the Supreme
Court to reconsider the stay and set another execution date.

The Innocence Project has also weighed in for Arthur. It told the
Supreme Court that DNA testing on a wig found after the slaying would
confirm whether Arthur was wearing the wig or the other inmate, who
claims he wore it.
