Werner Herzog – the acclaimed German film-maker – trains his camera on America’s death row inmates for this fascinating three-part factual series.
Despite Herzog admitting at the outset that he “respectfully disagrees” with capital punishment – legal in 34 US states and practised in 16 – the series is not a polemic. Instead, it’s a look at the effect of the death sentence on the human psyche, and, combined with the poetic images of which Herzog is so fond, is a thought-provoking meditation on life and death.
Tonight’s opener features a condemned man who protests his innocence.
Hank Skinner was convicted of the 1995 murders of his girlfriend and her two disabled sons in Texas. On death row ever since, Skinner has come within 20 minutes of execution before getting a reprieve.
Herzog lets Skinner do the talking, allowing the viewer to decide if this jovial but intense prisoner is a fantasist, sociopath or innocent victim of blind justice.
