As Cathryn said, I've had experience with this, along with others on this list.

#1 - If the cane needs to be stained (inside and out), it must be colored before the caning is done. Ritt dye works well. (Instructions with the package.) This makes the caning messy, but it also ensures that the inside of the cane is stained, as well as the outside.

#2 - You need to be a proficient chair caner before attempting this. Barrel shapes need to be done: Steps 1 and 3, then Steps 2 and 4, and finally the diagonals. In order to do the 2nd wall of double caning, you need tools that allow you to weave.
