for what it's worth. I just did my first one as well, but using paper not fibre. After a lot of back and forth asking questions from quite a few sources. I went with shellac that I added a little color to with stain. Both sides and a couple of coats and so far so good. One more thing, I thinned down the shellac and if you use varnish, I would think you should do the same.
