Yes indeed, Cathryn's site is a treasure trove for us beginners. I've done some caning for the past 5 years.

The simple answer is that chairs will - as you say - work themselves out. I was told to start diagonals in a back corner and work toward the front. The strand will will find an edge. Many experts tell us to pay attention to weave each diagonal so that you can form X and not V shape around the edges. It took me a long time to "see" what they were talking about and longer to "get it" - just how to cause that result. Others likely have a more discerning eye. ;-)
