Thanks all. Good approaches to try.

I believe Jill’s method would aim to make up for the 1/2” in small increments. Perhaps a tiny fraction of an Inch for each segment of the weave.

So if one rail were say 16” and the other 16.5, I could pencil-mark every 4” on the short side and 4.125 on the long side. Then I’d try to weave strands more compactly on the short side (and/or untwisted bit on the long side) to make up 0.125” on each of the 4 segments.

At least that’s what I visualize. :-)
