Stephen Jarvis’s “Twelve Psalm Tunes and Eight Anthems in Score” was published in London, c.1815, and he is fairly well-known (in the sense of 'I've heard of him') amongst us in the West Galleries. It is generally acknowledged that this is the same Stephen Jarvis, sailmaker, who married Ann Shearman in St. Saviour’s Church, Dartmouth, on 23rd Dec. 1784.
Could this gravestone inscription be the same Stephen Jarvis? :
“Sacred To the Memory of Stephen Jarvis, Native of Dartmouth, England. Died 7th Nov. 1834, Aged 73.”
It also includes details of other family members, including his wife Ann who died 19th Sep. 1848, aged 86.
The gravestone is located in the Old Loyalist (Anglican) Burial Ground in St. Andrew’s, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada (a transcript is available online)*.
The dates fit perfectly with the Dartmouth marriage in 1784, and we can work out that Stephen Jarvis was born c.1761, and his wife c.1762. Of course, it's perfectly plausible that there were two Stephen Jarvises in Dartmouth at the same time, but is anyone here able to get to St Andrew's to look in the County Record Office to find out more? And if it is the same Stephen Jarvis, did he continue composing in Canada? Confusingly there is another Stephen Jarvis (1756-1840), not born in England though, active at the same time in connection with the Loyalists, and in the same general area (Nova Scotia).
The plot thickens...
