Prairie Vocalist Cincinnati 1853

pp251-257

Both have lots of small notes in the bass part to reconstruct the instrumental bass (as well as the trumpet part)! Neither have the extended 2nd time trumpet "symphony" in the Surry Chapel book.

  • The Trumpet
Willie Israel, Mon Apr 9 5:14pm
On Easter, our church used an anthem that came from our Carribbean Moravian churches. It is a 3-part anthem - hand-written score. All we know us that this anthem is "traditional" for these churches,... more

Two possible red herrings to mislead us : 1. The HTI has a tune Trumpet (but associated with different words) related to a set-piece version "Immortality" : 7745 Trumpet... more
      • Another "The Trumpet"
David Welch, Tue Apr 10 2:23pm
This is probably another red herring, but in the 1991 revision of the Sacred Harp, tune 149 is called The Trumpet, with composer given as J. Williams, 1831. Its metre is 11.12.12.12, with verses... more

Willie Israel, Tue Apr 10 2:29pm
Hello David - I'm familiar with the SH "Trumpet" (very difficult) because I'm a shape note singer here in the USA. I met some of you folks when you came to our convention a number of years ago -... more
      • The Trumpet
Willie Israel, Tue Apr 10 2:22pm
Thanks Tim - The words to our anthem match those of your Dixon hymn. We have 5 verses plus the chorus. Our choral arrangement is 3 parts, has a wonderful symphony accompaniment. In fact, I noticed... more
        • William Dixon's 'Trumpet'
Ros Clements, Thu Apr 12 10:12am
The set piece 'Trumpet' appears in the 'Surrey Chapel Collection' 1807. The text is as Tim's suggestion - and has five verses, mainly sung by two sopranos & bass, with variations in verses 3 & 5 for... more

Willie Israel, Thu Apr 12 2:05pm
Yes, Ros - Thank you! this is definitely the same piece. Our manuscript copy has a little more by way of accompaniment, and when they sang it, our basses added some notes that fit well but don't... more

On my way to quire yesterday I popped into the British Library to have a look at the Surry Chapel Music and Dixon's Trumpet is quite a big set-piece , occupying pages 43-52 in both the editions I... more
