Madison Connor could not have been in more of a state with her parents and brother present. She led them through the doors like it was her greatest accomplishment, pointing out everyone she knew the name of.

Joe Teslock nodded, smiling to her introductions, hand in hand with her, pleased to be back in the Backwoods Court. He was taller than almost everyone there, dark, and scary enough to have scared anyone he needed to. Devon had asked him as a personal favor to make sure Cassandra was not hassled. His wand was readily available should the need arise. Erin, Madison Connor's mother, meanwhile, slunk by Joe's side, both hands around his arm like a safety blanket. Returning to Pitts' was less of a happy experience for her, but Joe kept her grounded. She looked more like her older brother than like a woman: Tall, barely healthy in her thin, slouched posture, pasty skin, black cropped hair in half a bun, and a nose that looked like Devon's up until his had been broken twice too many times.

Reece was 10, set to enter Pitts' next year, eyes wide at the school around him, drinking everything in, quiet as possible while Madison chattered on.

"There's Eve," Erin murmured nervously, too old to be afraid of an old schoolmate. She tried to keep her head down, until Joe kissed her cheek. Madison caught the exchange and beamed. That's right, her parents were in love. She was that awesome.

"Derek!" Madison Connor called out, dragging Joe towards the other family, Joe pulling Reece and Erin along effectively (really, the thought that Joe couldn't pull anyone anywhere was absurd). "Is this your family?" Madison grinned, smiling up at his parents. "These are my parents and my brother, Reece," she grinned, as Reece mumbled a "hullo" and stared at the floor.

"Oh," Erin responded, berating herself for choosing "reading" as the word to come out of her mouth. Reading. She didn't read, not unless she was at work, or it was a romance novel, cheap and trashy... more
