"She's not lonely," Devon bit back. "Dante's a mobster, and a prick, at that. He's a womanizer, Eve, so you set up a so-called friend you felt was lonely and vulnerable with a man perfectly capable of not only protecting her, but of taking advantage of her." He felt at least confident that Cassandra had no intentions of allowing anyone to take advantage of her, but the fact made him no less vicious.

"I am a parent," he retorted. "You get drunk and are quickly cozy with the first co-worker you lay foggy eyes on." He smirked, then, wondering if she had really thought that anything she did in the entire realm of Lockstone was lost on him. "Who, I may add, is soon to be an ex-co-worker. Michaelson spent two minutes alone in his office with Miss Baden and her face looks like a blue period tapestry."

He stood in silence while Adam approached, and then left. "Perhaps you should make a go for it instead," he sneered, "Add another notch to your belt."

Another man approaching their conversation saved Devon from increasingly bitter speech with Eve. Joe Teslock stepped towards them with a great smile on his face, and opened his arms wide. "Headmaster," he teased, wrapping Devon in a hug, while the latter attempted to balance his wine glass. "Great to be back!"

"You've missed it, I suppose?" Devon chided, grinning. "Erin here?"

Joe nodded and pointed, but as Devon made to vanish his glass of wine, Joe put up a hand, stopping him. "She's doing fine, old man. I could use a mead, myself. Eve," he added, with a warm smile, extending his hand genially. "You look great tonight."
