Christmas in July
Mon Jul 26, 2010 12:01am

Eve bought herself a new plant—a plump, green blob with two protruding green blobs on either side and purple spikes all around the base of it—for Christmas. This one had at least a good week in it before it turned brown and began to shrivel, she mused carefully as she critically inspected it at her desk. She left it after forgetting to water it, swaggering a little cheerfully down the corridor to Backwoods Court. She was uncharacteristically happy to be forced to spend the holidays confined to Pitts’ and Lockstone with Devon and a small assortment of students, but at least she wasn’t spending it at the Winchester estate with the rest of her loopy relatives.

Usually, she hated spending Christmas in Pennsylvania, but that was before she established contact with her family again and had them expecting her to actually participate in the phony festivities that went along with being part of the Winchester family. This gave her an out for one of the larger holidays, but she still hadn’t covered some of the lesser regarded holidays her family revered—Grandmother’s birthday, first of all; Eve had to come up with something quick, before she found herself stuffing down fatty cake at the ridiculously long dining table in the manor, ignoring the countless compliments her relatives threw towards the matriarch of the Winchester money.

Eve walked into the decorated hall, a poinsettia shoved into her untidy bun and promptly exchanged the customary glare with Devon. She seated herself, apparently in sync with the other head, slowly and cautiously into her seat, regarding Devon warily. Yes, both had been victims of illnesses in the past, but Eve was certain he was responsible for her losing one of her lungs last year at this time of year.

She waited until the others began eating before taking a sip of her drink and doing her usual picking-through of her food, smiling warmly at the few students in attendance that evening.
