Obviously Emma Westbrook didn't have friends in the high places she thought she did. Kim planned to stay away from her for the most part from now on, but keep her in line all the same if she'd try running her mouth off again. Professor Michaelson had broken up the girls as soon as Emma had toppled out of her desk in Ancient Runes, but next time there was no guarantee it would be that supervised. Emma was just as wispy and skinny as Kim was, but Kim was sure that she at least had muscles, and some guts as well. Emma definitely didn't.

She squirmed a little in her seat at Headmaster Grace's questions. She wasn't entirely sure where this was going. She knew about some of the rumors, but the idea that a professor could get in trouble for hitting kids hadn't yet crossed her mind. It could be gossip, but it couldn't possibly be illegal.

She wanted to answer the questions well, or at least honestly. Still, dishonestly she nodded to the first question, saying yes, Professor Michaelson had been kind to her. He'd been fine enough, she supposed, but not kind. Maybe irritated, or careless. Not nice, though. He didn't even seem to care that Emma was hurt. Not mean, but not nice. More like the businessmen who ignored the beggars on their way to work.

She shook her head to the next question. He hadn't threatened her. He'd just whined on a little about how she didn't want to explain herself.

At the last and third question, Kim finally couldn't get away with a mere gesture. "Nothing," she told Headmaster Grace simply, though she couldn't really remember. Maybe he'd said 'sorry,' or maybe he'd asked if she was okay. She didn't remember. It was weeks ago. She felt uncertain, opened her mouth to maybe tell him that she wasn't sure, but then closed it again. She could have sworn something had just touched her foot, and stiffened in response.

She smiled. Good. A hopeful start. Headmaster Grace gave Kim a small smile back, and allowed her to take a seat in front of his desk. What surprised him was when Kim swore, She's a real bitch , after ... more

Kim's answers were less satisfactory than her first one, but Devon was happy to have gotten that much. She looked a little confused after the last question, as though there could have been several... more
