So what's the tree made of?

Kim sat at the condensed dinner table, almost thinking it would have been less awkward to just hurt herself and let the nurse give her food along with a band-aid. She had spent the day fooling around her room, trying to think if she had anything interesting and Wizardy that she could send to her mom. She had eventually packaged up some fancy cream of Arlis's, and let it sit on her desk for hours. She even walked it half-way to the owlry before deciding it was a bad idea. She was still mad at Dana, even a year and a half later. And Dana probably didn't even want to hear from her, anyway.

Parents' Evening had been a huge mess. Some idiot had apparently sent Dana an invitation, and Kim had gotten her out of the Court just in time, then led her, storming, through the Backwoods Court, all while her mother slurred on about how she never sent any money, when she had nice clothes now and could eat all the time.

Kim had been at her worst. She had stormed halfway through the paths with Dana's junkie wrist in her fist, seething silently, then begun crying and cursing the closer they got to the trees, where she lit a quick floo fire and shoved Dana in.

She could have sworn she'd seen a face in the trees on her way back, but she'd been so busy the whole time just trying to get up to her dorm room without anyone seeing her. Eventually Dana's makeshift present made its way into the fire in the Ninth common room, unsent, unopened.

It was barely a week later, now, and she just hadn't felt up for that much. At least hardly anyone else was at the school. Kim came down to dinner in her usual jeans, sneakers and a green t-shirt with an advertisement for a gardening club on it, hair pulled back in a half ponytail (which it was finally just long enough for) and hands clutched in her lap. Headmistress Winchester sent her a smile and she gave a little one back, then sighed. She picked up her fork and knife and began on her food.
