Headmaster Grace and Professor Locke
The Start of Term Feast
Mon Oct 4, 2010 2:18pm

On second thought, he shouldn't have let her give the speech. Eve was positively high as a kite on his jealous misery, even more so since she had actually been in his office when he'd read through the article in the International Wizarding Journal. They had to be the most reputed source for scholarly information in the entirety of the Wizarding world, and they had put out a special issue with whom they believed to be the 100 most powerful Wizards and Witches in the world.

And Devon was an honorable mention. Honorable mention!

He couldn't believe it, the article offended every fiber of black silk that he wore on his body, every drop of wine beneath his skin. He, he, was one of the most accomplished Wandless Wizards alive in the world today! He, he, had stood up against the American Magic Council and forced them to give him more control over the school! And he, Devon T. Grace, had to hide the blasted location of his home from a government who feared - yes! feared! - his potential in Alchemy!

Honorable mention?!

He was incensed. It was an injustice, he felt. He was more intelligent than a third of the people on the list - he could point to them and pull them out by name - and Rand nonetheless, who was fool enough to care for Eve. Eve had laughed, of course, and run off with a smile the size of Asia, while Devon had sat glowering at the Journal. Surely they had forgotten him - that was all. But, in a short space after the Top 100 List, they offered up a handful of twenty or so honorable mentions. And, as it turned out, they had not forgotten him. He was there, and that was almost worse.

As if to push him down further, Cassandra couldn't seem to understand what was so important about everyone knowing how powerful he was. She tossed the magazine down on the desk like it was a dull tabloid, and shrugged, and asked him with a perfectly straight face if it really mattered. When he was inconsolable, she said she'd see him at the Feast and left. Her ability to see the extent of his vanity ashamed him, and worse, that she was not surprised. Now she sat on Rand's other side through Eve's speech, while Devon himself attempted to look . . . powerful?

He tried to get lost in his own thoughts. No one had gone so far as to create the sort of magic he'd done for Cassandra, to keep her safe in the Wizarding world. He could get patents on the devices he wired, though he'd never thought of it before.

It bothered him further that Cassandra was sitting beside Rand, not himself. She had been away all summer, and now it was clear it hadn't bothered her at all. He was still alone in his infatuation, with the only woman he couldn't seem to have.

And Seth Grimm-Batrice had failed his final exams and would be in the same building as Jael for another term.

If one more thing could go wrong . . .

He glanced over at Eve and gave a shudder. Eve. Happy. Disgusting.

As though the fates were planning to continue on in their puppet show of sadism, he heard Cassandra's bright, dry voice two seats away, and caught a side view of her smile, as she said, "Hey, Rand, congrats on the thesis. You must have spent the summer sleeping!"
