And hate. Don't forget the hate.

Sarah's interruption had an effect like warming up frostbite. Initially Devon sank into her defense, so grateful the most he could do was keep a face as though he didn't care. Then it began to tingle, prickle cold, that she should have to defend him. And then Eve summed up the entire situation impeccably. A conceited person with exceedingly low morals. . .

Cassandra, just feet away from him, laughing, ". . .sort of look like rats and cook so easily. We cut up my suitcase and made it into a trap for them!"

. . . Driven by a powerful, vain ambition . . . The second-to-worst part was that some other bastard with no morals, conceit and drowning in mirrors had beat him out of a placement. And the worst part was that sitting here, right now, it was so painfully obvious why he would never deserve Cassandra. He wasn't even sure he was hearing right. Rats? Cooking them? Cutting up suitcases for others? She was bat-shit crazy, looked like a voodoo queen, and he was diseased with love-sickness. The whole thing was vile.

It couldn't have been worse if they had skimmed over all his accomplishments and dubbed him, "The first openly gay Headmaster of an American Magical academy."

He cringed visibly in his seat, doing all he could not to stalk out of the Court or turn back to his untouched, unfilled plate. A bitterness he couldn't place wedged somewhere beneath his feet. He felt instantly angry at Sarah for giving Eve ammo, for making not only the loss worse, but to compound it by throwing into relief everything else he couldn't have. He felt childish, ill, and dulled to the point of uselessness. Two seats away from him, Cassandra seemed to be saying on, ". . . so we got a crossbow. . ."

And Devon was spent. He sipped at his wine feeling feeble, assuring himself that only Eve if anyone had noticed the waves, rises and crashes of his thoughts in the time span since she opened her mouth.

With an effort he lifted his wine glass and murmured, looking darkly in Rand's direction, a man who currently had both the prestige and the attention of Devon's only friend, "Salut." He drank.
