Eve was enjoying this too much. Devon wanted to simply leave. Sarah was digging him deeper in his grave with the Shovel of Good Intentions, Annet was joining in for the sheer fun of it (probably) and Eve had somehow wound the entire conversation around her finger.

And Eve, of course, was playing the field on two wholly separate levels. She had her obvious mentions to Devon's personality in regards to the list, of course, but there was something more there, and he was certain she was talking about the Privatization. Sick of being ignored and toyed about by the American Magic Council, he had claimed his inheritance to the school and declared it private in one fell swoop. Money started pouring in from donors, the papers were all over it, and then, overnight, it all fell to pieces. The students and teachers rebelled. And in the end, Devon, the Headmaster at last, had been standing alone in his office.

The results had been clear. It had taken him over. Kids shooting heroin outside his office, singing protest chants, and inside it had taken him hours just to break down his own pride.

"Annet," he all but snarled, grasping for a sharp turn in conversation, "What are your plans for the upcoming term?"

Sarah was perturbed by Annet's behavior as much as she was by Eve's. She felt like Alice at the Madhatter's tea table in Alice in Wonderland, where everyone around her was totally off their rocker.... more
