Eve was revolutionized. Partially. On the surface. It had been an entire week since she had explained Devon’s adoration for Cassandra to the woman’s face. A week for the rumors to intensify and develop into something even more interesting than what had actually taken place in Devon’s kitchen. A week for her conversation with Rand to swirl through her mind. He wanted her to take care about Devon, to quit antagonizing him needlessly. Well, not exactly needlessly; Devon deserved everything she did to him. But, she promised to let up.

An epiphany had come to her on a quiet evening, one she spent alone in her bedroom. Rand was busy with something; Adam was grading papers down in the Cerise, downing startling amounts of coffee and tea; Eve hadn’t seen Cassandra since she confirmed the secret. Eve had considered going over to Rakin and guiding Jael back to her office for some company, but then Eve was reminded of the spell that she had been looking for the week before.

So, instead of spending the evening thinking of ways to entertain herself, a different opportunity was thrown into her lap. Eve made herself a warm pot of tea and took her bag of chocolate out of her desk, and pulled down a stack of Charms books to scan through. It took all evening long, and Eve ended up falling asleep at her desk, but she eventually found the spell.

The day after, Eve spent working out the spell, finding loopholes around the side-effects. When she had perfected it, another idea struck Eve. She promised Rand to be nice. Be nice, she would be.

That night, Eve grabbed her wand and tucked it away in a ready place, just in case she’d need it. She hauled the book to Devon’s office. He wasn’t there. She reluctantly tried his kitchen again. He wasn’t there. Eventually, she tried the roof, knowing that was one of his frequented spots. It was a pretty warm night, but she was still glad she wore a sweater.

He was there. Her steps were silent as she approached him from behind. Then, in a cheerful tone, as though she hadn’t devastated his life just a week ago, Eve spoke to him with a serene smile on her face, “I found the spell.”
