He checked off the students, wondering what kind of person he could employ to do this sort of work in his place. A puppet, a monkey perhaps . . . Where the hell was Eve.

Seth Grimm-Batrice was suspended from all extracurricular activities, with the intention of forcing him to scrape by enough to get the hell out of Devon's school. A few other students were missing, including Jael, but as Devon hadn't seen Cassandra around, he assumed the two were together. He dug into the pockets of his trench coat and brought out one of Sarah's clever pills just as Jered walked over, swallowing it dry.

As soon as they were outside, Devon shrunk in unison with Jered, the wind pushing at him, an unfortunately easy task. He was neither good at eating nor gaining weight, and had given that up ages ago in college. His hair flew back off his face like a black mane behind him, designer scarf tugging hopefully at the knot around his neck. Its expensive threads made a stark contrast to the faded, worn, and bullied coat that went down to his knees, but he was attached to that coat.

He said nothing, didn't so much as look at Jered as they started off walking behind the students, until Jered asked about his chest. Jered's behavior still baffled him. Devon had plenty of students who enjoyed manipulating him with their power in society after they graduated, and a handful who had come back to thank him, personally, for one thing or another. But Jered was the first - and only - student to have been a favorite of Devon's, died, then come back to life with a completely different personality. It was as strange as how nice Eve was being to him now. Ah, but the chest. "It's cold," he murmured in response, adding, with a wry shiver, "And a never-ending source for witty insinuations."

Before she'd begun insisting on being so bizarrely sympathetic, Eve had greatly enjoyed Devon's injury, constantly commenting on how ironic it was that one could touch his heart now literally feel how cold it was. His response was a sneer; on a bad day, a well-aimed hex.

"And Sarah?" he asked, the sarcasm abandoned from his voice. "She's managing alright?" Such a little girl. He wished he could protect her, keep her with Jael in a picket-fenced dollhouse.

Jered decided that with most of the students vacating the school, he could whisk Sarah away for a surprise picnic on the Paths. He had thought of it as he tested the Quidditch for the forth coming... more

Jered gave a curt nod to Grace's answer about his chest, resisting the temptation to roll his eyes. Jered could guess who would mock him over something like that. Winnie. They had always been at each ... more

Jered seemed to be extremely irritated. Devon's forte of reading social signals was certainly not of the male persuasion, but the Coach's stony manner had turned taut in a matter of seconds after... more

Grace hadn't said it outright but it was still clear to Jered what the man was meaning. Dan Stoddard's death. But it was coming even clearer that he and Grace had different view points on the matter. ... more

It only took a second to dismiss the thought that popped into Jered's head with Grace's words. Sure, Jered had thought about that before but then only for mere moments. It was a ridiculous idea, the... more

Devon was surprised the moment Jered laughed. He was used to Quidditch-hero men desperate to be someone's knight in shining armor; either those, or ones he could respect and befriend. Though Rand was ... more
