Walking beside each other, Devon and Jered were most striking by the gap in their ages. Though they both huddled away from the cold, and found targets quickly with sharp, suspicious eyes, the nearly fifteen years between them was conspicuous. Devon failed to notice it, failed to recognize how old he looked in the moment, his gaunt cheeks alien to the outdoors. He looked unhealthy beside Jered, carrying that additional shadow of his life.

Jered's tone indicated that he had a slight idea of what exactly Devon suspected had been in his voice. Daniel's murder. Of course. It had wracked Devon for the better half of last year; he kept running up against the bastard then getting beat down by bad luck or conspiracy.

But Devon was deadly protective over the handful of women in his life, and homicide did not seem outrageous in the least. Daniel had not only wholly broken Sarah, but attacked Cassandra - a Muggle - with violent magic. And Arlis, too, by way of the Robeless had a certain extent to which she belonged to Devon. There was no reason for Daniel to live. It was no game for Devon, there was no pleasure in torturing someone and keeping them at by as he did with Eve - No, as long as Daniel lived he could still try for revenge, and it was best to take preemptive action. Sarah may have been Jered's, but she was also his.

"I imagine," Devon responded, continuing to walk slowly, adjusting his scarf against the wind, "That the immediate concern lies in Daniel's potential for vengeance." He pulled out a pair of Chanel gloves and put them on, over fingers quickly turning from white to pink and raw. He glanced over at Jered, a warning as much as a statement, and said, "There is a special, reckless danger in someone with nothing to lose."
