Where's your old soul?

And there was Damon Clay. Sloane watched him, occasionally out of the corner of her eye, until she felt him hovering a few feet away from her.

It struck her for the first time, that he might actually come close enough to approach her.

Damon had never initiated a greeting of any sort with Sloane, aside form muttered hellos and how-are-yous. Sloane had approached him once, in the Rakin common room, but without even the slightest intention of doing more than walking up to him and asking how his summer was, her way of saying that there was no reason she didn't usually chat with him. Just that they didn't chat. Their parents wanted them engaged, that was hardly reason to stop and make small talk.

She did not at first answer his question. Sloane gave Damon another cool, long look, a hello of sorts, and then observed, "You look well."

She didn't actually know what to make of it.

"I'm bored," she admitted, with a small, guilty smile, and then quickly arranged her face back into a much more stoic mask. Though, her amusement came more in mild surprise when she said, looking at his face even in the dark, "You got some sun."

It was half obvious why they actually were scared; there were death threats, the Unforgivable Curses had been used too. Damon had seen them in use, at the tender age of eight. He wasn't about to tell ... more
