I haven't been popping in as often as I used to in the old days, but decided to drop by today. So glad that I did; otherwise, I would have missed your beautiful message.

I remember Xena, of course, and I remember you rehearsing a doggie dance in Balboa Park when Quintzy was just a pup. It's tough to watch our four-legged family members grow old. Mike and I often discussed what we would do if Quintzy developed a tumor or was diagnosed with cancer in his later years. We always concluded that it would be selfish to rob him of his quality of live just to extend it by a few months. As it turned out, the choice was taken from us. He was happy, comfortable and energetic right up until his last few days. In fact, we walked 1 1/2 miles with him (round trip to the post office in town) on his last day. He seemed tired after the walk, but showed no other ill effects - until he refused his favorite dinner of cooked chicken and rice. He was increasingly lethargic that evening and we decided to take him to the emergency vet. By the time we arrived, he already had started to hemorrhage into his abdomen. The vet did an ultrasound and found a large tumor of the spleen. A hemangiosarcoma - an aggresive, fast-growing, invasive tumor that caused the spleen to rupture. We said our good-byes and left, bereft.

It didn't take long for us to decide that we needed to find peace. Shalom. She has been with us since late February and is helping us to heal (as we teach her to 'heel'). She is a sweet, sweet puppy. She will never take Quintzy's place, but she is a worthy successor to him. Here is a recent picture:
