Hello Jack,

I went back and started to count the letter guns beginning with the letter models with a goal of doing all the guns up until the end of commercial sales at the beginning of the war. I have revised my goal for the data I am gathering as I do this. This is a really slow process because half the records are back page records which I must view in the dark to compensate for poor images in the microfilm.

There may never be a precise count. This is eye crossing work. There are missing pages. There are 4% to 5% open records.

The number shipped is surely closer to 670 than it is to 6900.

I have actually done a lot of research on numbers but not necessarily on the numbers you are asking about. That research has resulted in several articles in the newsletter.

      Jack, I have heard the counts were off by a factor of 10 but the number of "H-D's" that come up for sale or view seem to be much greater in number then the first model "H-B's" that Mr. petty report... more
