When there was a knock on his door, he assumed it was most likely to be a staff member. Preferably the deputy headmistress, coming to tell him he could leave. He was surprised therefore, when a student entered. And not one of the ones he was already supervising, who he supposed might see this time as an excellent time to further their studies, especially given the types of students who took independent studies in the first place.

He watched the boy hover irritatingly for a moment before instructing him, a little shortly, to sit down. He listened, wondering why an extra two weeks would really have made any difference… It was the holidays. For all that he was stuck here, he was trying to pretend he wasn’t working.

“It’s not too late,” he advised, sorely tempted to point out that the start of term would also not be too late and to come back then, but he supposed he may as well deal with this now, “I mean, you’re not going to sit a CATS in History of Magic, obviously. But the majority of people doing independent studies aren’t aiming for full national exams - you already have a full course load, chosen by the school. Independent studies are often picked up once CATS are out of the way, actually. Are you interested in any particular eras? And are there any particular programmes you’re looking at applying for? If you show me their course requirements, I can work out what kind of portfolio you’d need to out together.”
