I think we should be friends [Tag Zevalyn]

Ness was feeling pretty pumped. Elementary school had been sucky, and full of really immature people. Whilst the few months separating it from a school like Sonora might not have seemed like a huge amount of time for people to do some growing up, the first year had sincerely hoped to find better things here. If they were grown up enough to go to school away from their parents, then surely they ought to be grown up enough too to talk about issues properly, and not giggle at words like ‘gay’ or use it as an insult. So far, it had been exceeding every expectation. Not only had Evelyn been mature about every subject that Ness had raised, it seemed like they were kindred spirits. Ness couldn’t wait for them to be Aladrens together. They could have all kinds of stimulating conversations. They could stay up all night talking.

Ness confidently dipped the blank badge, smiling happily as it came out bright blue, just as expected. Kir was grinning, clearly happy with the result too (because he had known it was what Ness wanted, right? Not because it meant he didn’t have to have his sibling around… It was probably the first one). Pushing those negative thoughts away, Ness headed over to Aladren table, things continued to look good, because there was space to sit next to Zevalyn, which Ness did, giving a small smile to say ‘hello’ before focussing again on the sorting. Evelyn was up, and her badge went into the Potion and-

“Huh?” It was not a loud interruption but was probably perfectly audible to her neighbour. The previously cheery expression was replaced by a crestfallen look. Pecari? Pecari?! How could Evelyn who was so smart and intellectual have ended up in Pecari? Ness was glad not to have said anything against the house because that would now be awkward - Evelyn’s sorting wasn’t something Ness planned to hold against her, or let change their friendship but it just didn’t seem right. Searching for a silver lining, Ness remembered that two of Kir’s D&D buddies were in that house. So, it wasn’t like… a complete dearth of any worthwhile people. Lily-Ronin who was possibly genderqueer was in it. So it could be okay. But it meant they were separated. This sucked.

The announcements were quite interesting. First off, prefects. Ness clapped, genuinely happy for Kir. The announcement about Quidditch was interesting too. Kir’s tales of lack lustre teams, not having enough players to play had been tragic. Part of the point of coming to Sonora was to get to play Quidditch properly. At least the school seemed to be taking that issue seriously. Good. And new staff, and the fair and stuff. That was all useful to know but less exciting than the first two bits of information.

Then it was food time. Food and talking to Zevalyn time. Ness gave one more sad glance at the Pecari table - this conversation would have been way better with a wingwoman, although it looked like poor Evelyn had it worse, she was looking positively miserable to be over in the wrong house. Still, there was nothing Ness could do to help right now...

“Hi. Your Kir’s girlfriend, aren’t you? I’m Ness, his sibling. Nice to meet you.” Ness was pretty sure Kir alternated between sibling and less gender neutral terms when discussing family. That was ok. Ness had not really decided what kind of pronouns to use yet. It was, of course, acceptable to try different things, and to change your mind later. Everyone said it was. But part of why the first year had ended up in Aladren was probably liking to feel certain about things. Ness didn’t want to adopt something, and then shed it off a few months later like a snake skin. If any kind of choice was to be made, it had to be a firm one. Not choosing also was increasingly becoming an option. Just letting the world roll with things. Aunt Catriona often said the fight for her generation had been the right to claim their labels - to be who they were, to tell people and to have it respected. The current generation, she said, seemed to favour ripping up all the labels and doing without. So, it didn’t really matter what label Zevalyn used - especially, Ness supposed, in the privacy of her own head. The thing that actually mattered more was them liking each other. Zevalyn was already pretty cool in Ness’ eyes by virtue of being a sixth year, and from all the things Kir had told her about how Zevalyn had been the one to ask him out, and about her D&D character. The trouble was, Zevalyn presumably already also knew all these things about herself, and didn’t need Ness to tell them to her. Hopefully they could talk about something Aladrenish and decently intellectual, and then Zevalyn would be impressed. That might take some building up to though. To start, and break the ice, it seemed safer to go with something they definitely had in common… “It’s good that Kir got prefect, isn’t it? He deserved it.”

OOC - as implied in the post, I also don’t mind how people refer to Ness. I understand that people will have differing reactions and default assumptions about what pronouns to use, especially amongst a group of teenagers with diverse backgrounds, and in some cases limited knowledge on LGBTQIA+ things. Roll with whatever your character assumes to be correct. No offence will be taken. Reminder that, visually, this is what you’re getting.
