Tabitha Hawthorne
We're both being daft.

Tabitha let out a slow, shaky breath. Goodness, she was an emotional mess lately - no doubt a side effect of lack of sleep. Discretely, she picked up her napkin and dabbed gently at her eyes and tried to compose herself before she lost it completely. To give herself something else to focus on in addition to Mary's words, she picked up her piece of toast and took a bite out of it, enjoying for a moment the sweetness of the jam with the ever so slight saltiness of the butter. Combined with her tea, she had the perfect breakfast. Or she would have, if it wasn't for the awkwardness between herself and Mary. She wanted the chemistry from when they first met and the Feast, the tenderness and calmness of their time together in Labyrinth Gardens and then the shenanigans and cheekiness from Mary's office. This awkwardness did not feel right.

Everything became clear when Mary mentioned that the reason for asking Tabitha to leave her office was as a result of how she thought the Defence professor viewed her. The words flashed through Tabitha's mind, her voice as clear as a bell.

I am... curious to see where this friendship of ours will go and what it will develop into.

Tabitha sighed heavily. It all made so much sense now. She'd sounded like she'd been writing one of her journal entries. She had become so used to her pursuit of different creatures, of observing and drawing conclusions that she hadn't even realised that it had basically become a part of her social interactions. How could she have said something so stupid? That was definitely not the impression she wanted to give.

"I'm so sorry, Mary," she murmured, discretely taking a hold of the Potion teacher's hand below the table. "I didn't realise. You are neither a challenge or a specimen... You are a beautiful woman who fascinates me and I want to learn - no, that's wrong - I want to get to know you. I'd love a friendship with you and... if it becomes anything else then I want you to know..."

She paused and took a deep breath. This was an important admission and she wanted to look Mary in the eyes, grey meeting dark brown when she said.

"I'd be very interested."
