I don't think it's just that

“Huh?” Cleo asked, when Parker mentioned something called a jayjay. He seemed to be figuring out how to explain, so she waited… Partly because she wanted to know what he understood about this whole thing, but also, honestly, anything to put off actually telling him…

She was confused when he began by explaining that he was talking about something one hundred percent human, which very much wasn’t the theme of the conversation - and it was his brother (had she known he had a brother? She couldn’t remember him mentioning him a lot of he had). And then he was talking about his brother, and the things he’d done, and crying. Parker, a boy, was crying right in front of her, and Cleo had no idea what to do. The human thing would have been to reach out and comfort him but she was afraid to. She had hugged Parker exactly once in their friendship. She had never been an especially touchy person. And now… She didn’t understand the veela part of herself, what made her powers affect other people. But touching seemed unsafe. She kept her hands clenched in her pockets, looking helplessly at Parker, unsure what to do, and feeling like a monster because she couldn’t even offer him a hug, or a hand on his shoulder.

“Parker…” she said, her voice shaking. “That’s…. Oh my god.” She took a deep breath, trying to collect her thoughts. They were… scattered at best. But the main thing to know was that that was over - it had to be over, right, if his parents had seen? They would have..? What? What did you do in that situation? Did people call the cops on members of their own family? Could they… make him go away? Make Parker safe from him? That was what she wanted. “What… what happened after that?” she asked, not able to form the rest into any more coherent phrasing than that.

What Parker said was, for the most part, comfortingly sensible. He wasn’t coming out with trite cliches, or trying to tell her there was nothing wrong her. He got the problem. He acknowledged that... more
