Midterm studying

Zevalyn Ives was half a year into her intermediate level coursework. She only had a year and a half to catch up with the rest of her age group if she wanted to take her CATS with them. So here she was, on Christmas Eve, in the library, studying, for the second year in a row. She wondered if getting to Advanced classes would actually be a relief for her, because then she could slow down and do the work at the same pace as everyone else.

Well, in a year and a half, she’d know the answer for sure, but for right now, she needed to focus so she could take her CATS then and find out.

She flipped through the Charms book trying to guess what she needed to learn on her own versus what would get covered before the end of next year. She felt pretty good about potions because once you knew your base ingredients and figured out the difference between chopping and dicing, it was pretty easy to extrapolate that information to unfamiliar potions, but Charms was just a long series of independent spells that needed to be practiced and memorized.

With a heavy sigh of frustration, she sat back in her seat and rubbed her eyes. “I think I need a holiday break,” she said aloud, to herself, but when she open her eyes she realized she wasn’t as alone as she’d thought she was. “Oh, sorry, didn’t mean to disturb you,” she apologized in a more library-appropriate whisper.
