Amelia Layne semi-Chaser
Making my debut.
Thu Feb 2, 2017 13:34

Before the first match, Amelia had been bouncing with enthusiasm even though she had known she was not going to play. Before the second match, she was frozen with terror because she had been informed she was going to play.

Always put the best face on things, her grandparents always said, so she smiled at Kit and said something about how while it was awful that Arianna couldn’t play today, it was going to be so much fun for the two of them to Chase together. Amelia had pointedly not thought about the facts that a) she was being trained as a Seeker mostly or b) as a result of said training, she thought she had a pretty good idea what getting hit with a real Bludger would be like, as John was the sort who seemed to think the best teaching strategy was to let bruises instruct her on not doing whatever she had just done again. Maybe it was because of the one time he had given her a concussion and she’d had to deal with Medic Eir outside of her Fair group, but Amelia found it weird when she saw John interacting with Clark or, to a lesser extent, Louis and almost even looking like a completely different person than he usually did….

Not that the Assistant Captain was ever unkind - he was polite and pleasant enough, and had even once mentioned that if any of them had difficulties in classes, he was willing to help them – but it was all in a sort of…mechanical way. Smiling and saying things like ‘please’, ‘thank you’, ‘hello,’ ‘goodbye’, ‘have a nice day’ and ‘I’m sorry about the concussion, that got a bit out of hand’, and so forth were things he did in ways that suggested a singer who knew the words but didn’t know the tune and also couldn’t carry any tune in a bucket, not even one with wheels on, but he seemed more natural with his friends. She wondered if something dreadful had happened to him sometime, or if he was just very, very shy, in a way one wouldn’t really expect a Beater to be – those would be the explanations in a novel, as he clearly wasn’t just, as her granddad would say, touched in the head, which had been her first impression.

Today, though, John wasn’t her problem. Rain and Crotalus Beaters were her problems. She was shivering when one of the older players helped her with warming charms and she kept shivering even after, she thought just because she knew she was supposed to be cold when she was this wet. Being warm and wet at the same time was really uncomfortable, too. At least, she thought, trying to put the best face on things, the rain might keep anyone from noticing her inevitable mistakes in the air….

A Crotalus seized the Quaffle and Amelia followed him. Squinting, she thought she saw him getting ready to pass and felt a thrill of excitement…before she heard a crack. Her heart hit her throat and she went up, flying upward to get away from the Bludger heading toward her. Unfortunately, this meant going straight into the direction of the rain, which hit her in the eyes. She tried to rub them with one hand, then dove, blessing her Seeker training, to get what there was of her vision back and then started trying to figure out where the Quaffle was, crossing her fingers that it was with Kit or Jack, so she could go that way.
