Simon M, Green Chaser
...There goes what was left of my right mind.
Fri Jun 9, 2017 14:15

Simon had not wanted to play Quidditch. Quidditch was violent and chaotic. Simon did not like violence or chaos. Therefore, Simon did not much like Quidditch, particularly when he was not in a comfortable box, but instead perched on an uncomfortable broom with people trying to hit him with Bludgers. He played it, yes, but that was only because of the social status which went with doing so and, of course, the desire not to let his roommate one-up him.

This was why Simon was very confused on the day of the Quidditch scrimmage. Since the House games had been cancelled for the rest of the year, he did not have to be here. He would lose no face if he sat in the stands, or even if he did not show up at all. He could, he knew, sit quietly inside and read all day. Instead, though, he was wearing a strange, uncomfortable pull-over shirt that had just abruptly turned green, standing around with some people he didn’t even know and wondering what in the world was wrong with him.

It’s official. I have lost my mind.

He did not like Quidditch, and he really, really did not like disorganization. Without orderly rosters and captains and a clear chain of command put into place by people well above him, everyone had to argue for their own desires. It was messy, uncivilized, even – a civilized society was one which was ordered, where everyone knew his or her place. Simon had been forced to just announce that he was going to be a Chaser and hope that he wasn’t violently overruled by some Muggleborn. It was quite distressing and he wanted to abandon the project altogether, but he would lose face if he retreated now that he was here, and Unc – a person called Nicholas who might or might not even still be alive, Simon really had no idea, had already somehow, Simon hadn’t been told the specifics, shamed the family enough for one lifetime without Simon giving him any help. He had to seem confident and assertive with everyone just so they wouldn’t think too much about Uncle Nicky. So he stayed, feeling as though his insides were doing the nervous dance his outsides were being held back from and trying to distract himself from this by trying to figure out a way this could be considered Winston’s fault.

It didn’t work very well.

He felt as though he were in a peculiar nightmare as he kicked off amidst an unfamiliar team, with everyone in unfamiliar colors. He knew he was in green, but he felt all wrong that way – he was supposed to be wearing red and surrounded by other Crotali. Maybe the others were just as confused, because to his surprise, he ended up the first person with the Quaffle.

Oh, no.

He fled the scene in haste, listening for Bludgers, trying to distinguish their whistle from that of the wind going past his ears, and hoping he was going in the right direction. Luckily, the person he was flying toward did appear to be wearing purple. He still didn’t waste any time, though, in trying to pass off the Quaffle, then hoping that whoever he threw it to was someone who was reasonably compatible with the way the Crotalus Chasers were used to working together.
