If he had been asked, John supposed he would have had to admit that he was surprised when Joe, seemingly undeterred by his failure and John’s proximity to him and Amelia, went for the Bludger again. John, mildly irritated, deflected it once more, making sure to hit it away from his brother this time.

“What the hell was that?” he shouted at Joe. “I taught you better strategy than that!”

He didn’t think, in retrospect, he had meant to say that. It had just come out naturally. It was, however, the first thing other than ‘thank you’ (when Joe shoved mail from home at him) that he’d said to his brother in months.

Not relevant. Focus on Amelia. You can talk to Joe about strategy later. No! No, you can’t. No, don’t think about that. Not relevant. Focus on Mouse. Mouse has to win the game. Joe is not Joe, he is just the other Beater. He grudgingly resigned himself to pretending that he could talk to Joe later and criticize his brother’s faulty strategy. He couldn’t, he had made up his mind about that, it would be selfish to talk to Joe because John was the only one who stood any chance of benefiting from doing so, but he could pretend for now.
