Purple was not, Simon supposed, the worst color in the world. Lots of people in the world had worn it and a good few of them had been far, far more important wizards than he. The sad fact was, however, that the past century had happened, and in the course of it, it had become less and less socially acceptable for males to wear that particular color. When the question of how to address Crotalus’ unfortunate union with Pecari had come up, he had been forced to weigh in on the side of those who favored a sort of reddish-brown he suspected was closer to the Teppenpaw’s secondary color of maroon than anything neutral but which was still at least not inherently something that might make him the target of Remarks if this did not go well for ‘his’ team.

‘His.’ He could not really think of it as such, of course, because it wasn’t – it was Miss Meeks’ team with a few Crotali reluctantly appended to it. There was, he thought, no real rhyme or reason, either, to which ones of them had been tacked on where – it was true that he could barely understand a word Miss Vorontsov said, both because she spoke with a heavy, unpleasant-sounding accent and because her grammar was bizarre, but he still would have picked her over her year-fellow, who was some Muggleborn, and while he wouldn’t do so if he was himself for obvious reasons, if he had been Miss Meeks, Simon thought he would have chosen Winston over himself for the Chaser Spot Simon currently occupied. But yet, here they were, a hodgepodge team with a Muggleborn captain, listening to their Charms teacher his father said used to be a writer of some kind try to introduce the game.

The world was a very strange place.

The Quidditch Pitch, however, wasn’t, not really, at least not once they were in the air. Simon took to the skies with a feeling of relief, leaving the politics of the game behind him for the simplicity of trying to catch one ball while avoiding another, and also, to the maximum extent possible, other people.

Total avoidance, however, was not possible, and he was thus mostly relieved to see that the right side had started off with the Quaffle. Making and receiving passes was difficult, but not as much as stealing from the other team. He flew after Ingrid Wolseithcrafte (which felt strange; she was supposed to be the enemy!) and was there when she passed the ball to him.

I have it. I have the Quaffle. I got a spot here even though Winston and Miss Vorontsov were – I assume in her case – both options.

…I can do this.

He covered ground quickly, his heart hovering near his throat as he tried to use his peripheral vision to maximum effect to allow himself to a) avoid straight trajectories that might draw Bludgers to him and b) not crash into other people while attempting to avoid Bludgers. When he saw what looked like a solid opportunity to pass to the reddish-brown robe near him, he imitated Ingrid’s gentler pass in case it was Mr. Fitzgerald, but also imitated her in not looking too closely – that would slow him down. He let the Quaffle go and then dropped lower in the air, hoping to get in place to set up a play for later, or maybe sooner if someone intercepted the Quaffle.

This was weird. And a little frustrating. They were only one player short. It was so close, but they still had to join forces and have a mixed team. Although, on the plus side, the Crotali players... more
