What could make it better?

Gary strolled out to the bonfire with a mixture of interest and trepidation. He'd never been much of an outdoors type person in practice, although he'd had plenty of practice in theory and simulation. As he made his way towards the giant fire on the Pitch, he recalled the one time he had been camping. It had been before his mother had died, they went as a family for a weekend, 'just for the experience' his parents had said. What an experience. From the weather, to the equipment, the food and the wildlife... everything had turned against them. They had wound up soaked to the bone, shivering, stomachs growling and huddling together in the car as everything on their camp that hadn't been stolen by critters was slowly washing away in the rain. It had been miserable. Yet, Gary found himself smiling at the memory as he walked. It had turned Dad off to the idea of anything outside for an extended period of time, so they never tried again. Then Mom died and... He shook himself out of that state of mind, it would do no good, that much he had figured out.

At the bonfire itself, he got food and watched the performers. They were actually quite good, were they all witches and wizards as well? They would almost have to be in order to perform here, right? Wizards deciding to be circus performers... something about that just seemed odd to him. However, it also made a certain amount of sense as he thought about it. If they could use their abilities subtly enough, they could be quite the performer. He wondered briefly how many stage magicians were actually wizards or witches.

He was back at the end of the food line as the announcement was made about the cup. He applauded for the Teppenpaws and realized they may figure out if the performers were actual magic users. Maybe he'd have to find one of them and ask after the party. The food line started moving again and he turned to follow it, a moment later a familiar voice sounded over his shoulder. He turned to see Jasmine all decked out like an official cowgirl. He instantly felt a little out of place in his jeans, t-shirt and open school robe. He smiled though and returned the greeting.

"Hello. Yeah, so far it's far better than my last official 'outdoor fire and tents' type experience." He grinned, "How about you? Having fun? You're certainly dressed for the occasion, I take it you've done this before?"

Jasmine was willing to give the bonfire the benefit of the doubt. Mom said it was the least interesting of the midsummer events, but Jasmine was still a first year and had no other midsummer events... more

Jasmine beamed as Gary complimented her outfit (or at least, she chose to take it as a compliment; he’d mentioned it anyway, and not in a bad way, so that must mean he liked it). “Not exactly,” she... more
