Gary just shook his head in disbelief as she talked about her horses. "As big as elephants? That's incredible. What kind of wingspan do they have? To get enough lift for that kind of weight... That's like a swallow trying to carry a coconut." He grinned, mainly to himself, at the reference. "Are their bones hollow like birds? That would drop their weight considerably, but would it leave enough strength to support the creatures while they were standing?" He mused for a few moments, realizing that he had no real way of calculating weight ratios and bone density factors in his head, even if he knew all of the correct numbers and formulas. "I guess that's another thing to chalk up to 'a wizard did it'." His brain paused again momentarily as it took another sudden left turn at that thought and shot down a completely unrelated dark alley in his mind, "Do owlbears actually exist? Lore usually claims that a crazy wizard made those things."

He chuckled a bit at her reaction to his camping story. "Yeah, Dad had mostly gotten the tent up while Mom was unpacking the food when the rain started. It started off slowly enough, but then the critters came to steal the food when Mom went back to the car. Dad and I saw them and we both moved to defend our pantry." Gary crouched a little and jumped, getting into the story. "Dad's foot got tangled in the tent line and he pulled the whole thing down while landing on his face. Mom turned and shrieked as the animals scampered away with our food, just as a huge bolt of lightening streaked across the sky. It was followed almost immediately with a booming crash of thunder and the skies opened up. We all ran for the car, and spent the rest of the night there." The same sad smile crossed Gary's face again as the memory washed over him again. Then he snapped himself out of it and back to the present. "The rain let up in the morning, and pretty much everything was gone. It was an experience."
