Jozua Sparks
Hoping this is just a formality

Jozua stood before the Defense professor’s office door and wished the school would just keep the same one for more than a couple years at a time. This was the third time he needed to have this conversation. Though he guessed it did get easier each time. The first time he’d only been twelve and Professor Pye had been more than a little intimidating. By the time Daniel Nash came along, he had a system all worked out and the professor hardly had to do much more than supervise and give a mini lesson every now and then.

Now Jozua had an O on his DADA CATS under his belt and he almost didn’t need a staff instructor anymore. It didn’t feel quite right not to, though, and the school did require a staff advisor/overseer if a club did anything remotely dangerous, and dueling pretty much defined ‘risky club activity’ so here he was.

He knocked and when he was invited in, he entered and took the seat intended for visitors. “Hi,” he said, “I’m Jozua Sparks,” he reintroduced himself in case she hadn’t caught his name yet. With his new self-resolution not to blow things up or set anything on fire, he thought he was a much less noticeable presence in class.

“I run the Dueling Club here,” he continued, getting right to the point. “I was hoping you’d take over for Professor Nash as our advisor and instructor? Basically, it just involves a few mini lessons, especially at the beginning of the year. I can probably run drills now, unless you want to, and Professor Nash was our dueling moderator during bouts.”
