(CW - discussion of consent and allusions to rape culture)

Kir took a seat at the edge of the room, as had become his habit. Today this meant he was occupying the back row. He had had to shrug off Ness’ question about what all this was about, as he obviously had no idea why everyone was being asked to join his class today. It was a bit strange, and the school - which normally seemed like such a small group - suddenly seemed like a whole lot more people when crowded into one classroom.

A half veela. His first thought was Is it Zevalyn? but he really hoped she would have told him something as serious as ‘by the way, I might render you incapable of consenting to what we’re doing.’ It was Cleo though. Ok, he would admit to having noticed she was pretty, but he had sort of gone through a phase where a lot of girls (mostly girls) were turning his head and he would never have thought more of it than that. Wow. Poor girl. This whole thing sounded like it had been pretty rough on her.

He found himself surprised and impressed by how the staff were handling it though. He made a small noise of irritation as someone used the word ‘creature’ but they were quickly corrected by Professor Hawthorne. The folklore was kind of interesting too. It was when they got to the defences though, that Kir really found himself loving Professor Hawthorne. Because the words ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gay’ had just been mentioned in front of the entire class. Sonora did not seem to do much in the way of whole school teaching on those kinds of subjects, and he knew that the range of approaches his Pureblood classmates’ parents took would range from just pretending such things did not exist to acknowledging that they did but deploring them as wrong and amoral. He wondered to what extent Professor Hawthorne was preaching to the converted with those remarks. The terms were thrown out without much explanation, and the moment was over in a flash, and it was possible that what she was saying was brief and opaque enough to go straight over the heads of any students who didn’t know that much about the subject to begin with. It was a start though. The existence of such people had been acknowledged, openly in class, and the words ‘sexual orientation’ were glowing in pristine white chalk on the board. Maybe anyone who didn’t know would ask. Except admitting to not knowing something like that, or talking about something with the word ‘sex’ in it in front of all your peers, was probably not something most teenagers, especially the repressed, abstinence only type, were going to do. There was something Kir could do about that though...

On the whole, it was a pretty good lecture, in terms of treating Cleo as a being, and setting reasonable boundaries. The point that her powers so far were… accidental was something he supposed he needed to remind himself of. He had to say, the idea of hanging out with a veela wasn’t something he was super comfortable with. Someone who was under a veela’s thrall was not capable of making rational decisions. They stopped being capable of saying ‘no’ and that wasn’t a good thing to take away from a person. There was the myth that guys were always up for it. That it was all of their fantasies to be seduced by beautiful women. He could not imagine anyone taking a complaint of being seduced by a veela very seriously. Of course, Cleo herself would suffer from that kind of attitude too. Sexualising veela was dangerous not only for their potential victims but society already had such problems with how it treated women - with sexualising them, with victim-blaming them. He could only imagine that all the worst parts of what was thrown at women were going to be magnified when the being in question was supernaturally attractive. When luring men in was an inherent part of her nature. Cleo seemed pretty quiet. She didn’t exactly seem like she was out to lure the boys and WLWs of Sonora into her den of vice. She mostly seemed like she wanted to be left alone. The most notable incident he could remember involving her was last year when she had suddenly ended up dolled up in a ballgown whilst talking to Winston, and reacted by bricking herself into a small tower. Both incidents were clearly part of the accidental magic plague. His and hers. Kir directed a glare at the back of Winston’s head. Any luring in Cleo may have done had been accidental on her part, as Professor Hawthorne had said. Any giving into it and letching on her was entirely Winston’s flaw as an entitled prick.

And then it was Q&A time. He raised his hand, even though she had said people with questions could come up to the front, but Kir was pretty happy to share his thoughts with the whole class. In fact, that was the point of it. He was aware that his behaviour was potentially a little disruptive, and that this really was not the main point of the class, but he wasn’t sure he’d ever get such an opportunity again.

“Professor. I don’t know that everyone here will have understood what you meant about sexual orientation. Can you explain?” he asked. Even from his position at the back of the room, the little flashes of rainbow that adorned his chest and his wrist in the form of various badges and bracelets were probably entirely visible, suggesting that his agenda was neither winding up the teacher nor for the sake of his own education on the subject. Conscious that Professor Hawthorne may have limited what she said for a reason, he helpfully chimed in “Of course, if you’ll get in trouble for spelling it out that boys can like boys and girls can like girls and that there’s nothing wrong with that, then I’m very happy to do it.”
